Within my highschool years, a lot of school shootings had occurred. Whether we heard about them on TV or the news, everyone was notified of the events that were happening. Once it became more of a problem, my school turned everything around and switched our whole protocol.

First, we were just taught to hide in the corner and lock the doors but since it was happening to schools all over, we needed to get more “serious” just in case the action came into play. The teachers started to display videos of students barricading the doors, discovering resources within the classroom to use as protection, and making new plans in case this situation would happen. My school practiced and practiced till every student knew what they were doing in this type of situation. The sad part was, the majority of the students didn’t really take the drill seriously, one student even said “This will never happen at our school, why do we even do these dumb drills”.

A couple months after that, during my senior year we had another drill that we all thought was just a normal monthly practice drill. While waiting for the principal to tell us the drill was done over on the loudspeakers, out our windows we saw numerous cop cars pulling up at our school. We all suddenly went into shock and realized something was actually happening. Moments later, a cop came into each classroom and notified everyone that a student had brought a gun to school and had it in his backpack. Hence hearing that news, everyone had to stay in their classrooms until dismissal. We then later found out, the student with the gun said to his friend “I have a gun in my bag and i’m going to shoot up the school”. That student thankfully, then went and told the principal and she let the other faculty know what was going on. Luckly, everyone was okay and sent home but just to think, if that student didn’t tell the principal, what could’ve happened is a whole different story.
