In life, a lot of different experiences can occur whether it has a big impact on your life or not. Depending on the experience you go through, it can change your whole perspective on life in a good or bad way. One experience that really changed my perspective on things was when me and my mom were stuck in a flood.

I can remember, I was about ten years old coming home from the mall on a rainy day. At the time my mom was driving her minivan on a regular road that we drove everyday. She was taking me to my dad’s house to spend the weekend with him. Once we got into his town we turned onto a road called Newton Ave which was a small back road to get to his house faster.

We were in a torrential downpour so it was very hard to see out the windows, let alone drive. All of a sudden the car started making very odd noises and came to a complete stop. In a matter of seconds my mom’s car was completely under water. All I could think about is us not making it out and how we are even going to get out. My mom just kept saying “everything was going to be okay” but I really thought she was wrong. She then started to climb out her window and water started coming inside the car, which caused me to freak out even more. I started to hear sirens coming from all different ways and realized we were not the only ones stuck in this flood. Finally, my mom pulled me out of my window and carried me on her back to where I could walk. While we were waiting on the side of the road for the police to get the car out, neighbors offered my mom and I towels and water.

The whole time, I was in such shock and was crying during the whole experience. Since that day, I realized that anything can happen in a matter of seconds and that you always need to be aware of your surroundings. Now when there are rainy days, I get a little more alert and cautious of what’s around me especially when driving. From this experience, I now have a fear from drowning and will always remember this day.
