College Brings Mental Illness to College Students ?

Before I start I asked myself what are the reasons for college students having mental health issues? I was thinking about a couple of reasons but I personally thought that it would be better for me to get information from sources including my own research. Also research from my own college students here at Rowan University. Personally through my circumstances I understand how college students become stressed, or even overwhelmed. I also understand how hard of a task it is to not get down on yourself when these obstacles blind side you or hit you face on.

To get a better understanding on how college students’ mental health is affected I wanted to do research and asked my peers at Rowan University.

What do you think are the causes of college students’ having mental health issues ? Even personally, if my peers have relatable issues on how college affects their mental health would be great.

Me starting out and doing my own research on why these events happen to these college students mental health. I searched up an article called the “Suicide Prevention Resource Center,” the article states that in college, you have to figure out the right balance between work, family, and school. Which is a hard task to ask a college student that has not dealt with these situations before. What stands out the mosts in this article is that, “The academic load in college is often larger and involves more complicated work than in high school. Attempting to keep up with that, on top of your job and family responsibilities, that can add additional stress to your daily life — especially if your family and work obligations are so demanding that you fall behind with your schoolwork,” which explains where these mental health issues are coming from with some college students.

I have recently interviewed my friend Renard a Freshman in the Class of 2023 on the idea of what he thinks are the probable causes of college students having mental issues in college. He took the situation of himself saying that “The idea of knowing that all the student loans I took out and the idea of me having to pay them back stresses me out and plus I have debt coming out of college,” which explains one situation how the student debt that comes from college scares him.

Second person I interview was Jordan a Freshman in the Class of 2023 I asked her the same question and she stated “the tasks of everything being on me—my responsibility of working, playing sports, and dealing with my education is frustrating. Talking to her made me realize college students really have minimal hours of their own time. Overall, she was saying that the workload she receives is too heavy especially having other priorities.

Lastly, I talked to Kathy a Sophomore in the Class of 2022. I asked her “what do you think is the probable cause of mental issues in college?”and she said “the idea of college kids having to worry about their future and still get schoolwork done, worry about financials, and their well-being is a hard task as a college kid which is unfair.” Which is another probable cause of people having mental illness just having worry about everything involving the present time and future is stressful.

I feel as if we as a society underplay the mental illness brought to college students around the world. I feel like it just starts with communication between people to get a better understanding on why they feel the way they do. People nowadays don’t talk to people face to face.

One conversation could save a life or a persons’ well-being.
