I went around campus, mainly the library, and asked five different people the same two questions. How important is Mental Health? Do you think its selfish to put yourself before others? And for the most part, all their answers were the same, some responded in a way which made it seem they didn’t feel like talking at all. However, there were three people who seemed interested into what I asked them.

Noah, from Maurice Town NJ, majoring in Computer Science finds it, “Important, I never really think about it because I don’t have any mental illness”. He also doesn’t find it selfish to put yourself before others as well.

Chris, from Park Ridge NJ, majoring in Physics, in my opinion had a much better and personal response. He said, “Well I think it’s very important because you only have you, who else is going to take care of what’s going on in your head” He also stated he dealt with mild depression growing up so he thinks its very important to have close friends who are willing to listen and care about what you have to say.  “Not at all, putting yourself first, when relating to mental health, is something you should always be doing”, was his response to my second question.

Karen, from Princeton NJ, majoring in Physics, said, “I find it very important because if you aren’t okay then you can’t help anyone else with being okay too”. Which I find very true, if you can’t say to yourself that you’re doing okay, then how can you look at someone else and tell them they are.

The other two people I interviewed were Chris and Talia, both seemed like they were having a bad day or just overall miserable people in general. Both giving me the same bland answer saying “Important, not selfish”. Besides them, everyone else I could relate to in some type of way, with Chris from Park Ridge, he also mentioned how everyone goes through or is going through something in their life that’s effecting their mental health.

Weather its school, a job, or even a relationship, the main point is to always focus on yourself, and make sure you’re being the best version of yourself, you can possible be. And trust me because I know from experience, once you put yourself first mentally, everything else in life will just come into play overtime.
